Summary

In this world, no matter who you are, we all need food to keep ours lives basically. Not only human beings but also animals need food. However, since 2006, a serious food issue has risen in the world called "food crisis"

There are more and more people are suffering from this. Unite Nation chief, Ben Ki-moon, said that UN has big concern of high food price. UN and World Food Program have decided to fund extra $ 755 million for reliving such urgent situation.

What is the reason for such high food price in recent years? Plant fuel is the reason of this. There are three main methods that make disorder food market price. Firstly, grain, like corn is used to produce ethanol, and vegetable oils are used for biodiesel. Secondly, farmers have been encouraged to grow the biofuel production. Lastly, more and more people know the huge benefit from grains, it also makes prices increased.

There is one more significant reason for food crisis which is climate changed. For example, Australia, the second biggest exporter of wheat after USA, now has experienced the drought since six or seven years ago. The most serious drought has forced about ten thousand farming families off the land, and threatened the economic capability of some agricultural citys.

The food crisis have gravely affected all over the world. Egypt is the major rice manufacturing country which exports rice to Turkey, Lebanon, Syria and Jordan. Since the rapid increase rice price by nearly 30% in one day, Egypt government decided to limit the amount of rice export to those regular customer countries in terms of overcoming sufficient domestic demand. The same situation also happens in India that they keep their homegrown rice to feed their 350million malnourished population.

Although food aid has increased to support poor countries, but the long term solution is to encourage developing countries to produce food to feed them. In South Africa, government is encouraging people start farming again. It can not only control the food price but also sort the problem of food shortage.
Food crisis issue has serious affected our daily life. Although most people in New Zealand can still able to afford such high food price, but in the outside of New Zealand, things is not that simple. Do not waste food probably is what we can do in this stage.

hey emily...good topic.I think this topic is very important especially during these times where there are many issues around the world that is effecting many people because of lack of food.I think countries that go through war for eg iraq, pakistan and poor places such as india and africa face these problems.I think as days goes by food problem seems to be getting more worse.Food prices are also increasing and this is hard for lower income people.Probably many organisations are trying thier very best to help these countries but however its may be quite difficult to help each poor individual in these places as there are too many of them. Some countries, the government is also trying to reduce the food price as its too expensive these days but it may be difficult too as there are many economical and political sitautions around the world.

Besides water shortage, undoutedly, food crisis is another big issue in the world-wide. We can easily hear the news about such problem from every day's news report or from other resources. There are too many pool people are suffering from hunger, therefore such problem should be noticed by everyone.

Hi Emily, great choice of topic. You sure have a good view of the big topics effecting the world, food crisis is a huuuge problem especially in such times as these. While a small percentage of the world is living in bliss and absolute luxury, a larger percentage of the world's population is actually surviving on almost nothing. Its good to remind people of topics like these, maybe the problem can be helped to a small degree by those who care.. I'm definitely grateful for what I have. Thank you Emily.

Hi, Emily. Your topic is one of hot issues in the world. As you mentioned, a lot of people in poor countries are faced with food crisis now. My country is separated the North and the South and I often hear some news about North Korea. North Korea is one of coutries that have difficulty to get food.Contrary to the North, South Korea can afford to help North Korea so the government and some enterprises are supporting several tones of rice and food for North Korea. I think food crisis is related to the existance of Earth so all nations try to make this problem better for the future.

Hi folks, you are right. Food crisis bothers lots of countries in the world. We shouldn’t waste food. But will this save the world?

According to New York Times, Americans spend 16 percent of their budget on food. In contrast to Americans, Nigerian families spend 73 percent of their budgets to eat, Vietnamese 65 percent. Food price increases due to the shortage. Food becomes less affordable in these countries. People from these poor countries struggle to live.

It is understandable that Egypt and Indian governments keep their homegrown rice to feed their own people because US accounted for at least half the rise in world corn demand in each of the past three years for the corn ethanol production. Americans are producing fuel from corn while the European are producing fuel from rapeseed, palm and soy oil.

So far, food crisis can be fixed if Americans and the European stop producing fuel from crop. But they will not stop!

I believe the food crisis is the crisis between developed countries and the developing & poor countries. In relate to my topic on Beijing Olympics, the western world does not allow the developing countries to be strong.
